Readable archives / backup limits

Save WhatsApp messages as a PDF copy

A PDF is useful for reading and searching outside WhatsApp. It is an additional copy of an exported conversation, not a replacement for WhatsApp's own backup or transfer tools.

Step by step

  1. Choose the right preservation job

Decide whether you need to continue chatting in WhatsApp, keep a readable history outside it or preserve attachments. A PDF is a reading format; account restoration needs WhatsApp's supported mechanisms.

  2. Export and keep the source

Export the intended conversation and retain the original transcript or ZIP. Include media when useful and make another untouched copy before you begin conversion.

  3. Inspect the preview

Choose the source in Threadkeep and compare representative messages and dates. Check the photo warning. Use a date range only when you want a selected reading copy.

  4. Save the PDF and optional HTML

Download PDF for a searchable document. More options includes an HTML reading archive. The other format of the same imported chat does not consume a second successful-download allowance.

  5. Verify storage independently

Open the finished file from your chosen folder, search for a known message and keep a second secure copy if it matters. Do not delete your only original because a PDF opened successfully.

A reading copy has a useful but limited role

A PDF gives you message text you can search in a standard viewer, consistent pagination and a file you can open without the original chat interface. It can be useful for personal reflection, a selected keepsake or reviewing an old exchange. Those conveniences do not turn it into a full phone backup.

The transcript came from an export, so its coverage depends on what WhatsApp produced and what survived any transfer. The formatted document also depends on your selection and the exporter limits. Always keep the original when completeness or future conversion matters.

Plan a small archive you can understand

Use separate locations for source exports and generated reading copies. Identify when each export was made and which conversation it represents without changing the attachment filenames inside the package. Keep a simple note if the PDF is a selected date range rather than all available messages.

A second copy is only useful if you can still access it. Test opening a saved file rather than relying on a folder icon or synchronization badge. If one copy is on a phone you plan to replace, save another on a separate device or destination appropriate for the conversation's privacy.

Know how free saves work

Threadkeep has one daily allowance in the browser. Preview does not use a save. The first successful PDF or HTML download of the current import uses one; downloading the other format of that same import shares the use. The on-page note tells you what is available in your browser.

Clearing browser storage can affect local settings, but it is not an archival strategy. A research question is not a payment, and answering it does not increase your allowance. The site describes any available unlock separately; this guide does not promise an automatic unlimited-download purchase.

Check important omissions

Compare the oldest and newest dates, a known sender and a message associated with a photo. Unsupported attachments belong in the source package, even if the readable copy references them. If the PDF omits something, determine whether it was absent from the export, filtered out or unsupported.

For a very large conversation, create a smaller reading selection without damaging the original. A manageable document is easier to inspect than a huge file that fails on a phone. It can sit alongside the complete export rather than pretending to replace it.

Questions

Is a PDF a WhatsApp backup?

It is a readable copy, not a WhatsApp restore file. You cannot use Threadkeep's PDF or HTML to import messages back into WhatsApp or rebuild an account.

Can I make a PDF for free?

The browser has a limited daily allowance for successful saves, with preview available every time. Check the current download note and Free saves page rather than assuming unlimited downloads or a paid unlock that is not available.
